Tissot in Rome: exhibition at the Cloister of Bramante - Tissot a Roma: mostra al Chiostro del Bramante
Chiostro del Bramante is a stunning space nestled in Rome's historical centre, behind the infamous bar della pace. The Cloister of Bramante is the work of Donato Bramante (1444-1515) and is an extraordinary example of renaissance architecture.
After some restoration, the Chiostro sprawls over a total area of 1000 square metres, the spacious rooms hosting prestigious works of art of various artists and exhibitions.
In the past year, the Chiostro has hosted exhibitions from ‘Escher’ and more recently, ‘Chagall'. For the first time in Italy, it is now the turn of the long-awaited exhibition on the French painter James Tissot (Nantes, 1836 - Buillon 1902).
I was kindly invited to the preview evening.
On display are 80 works from international museums such as the Tate in London, the Petit Palais and the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, which tell the entire artistic career of the painter, french born but british by adoption, he was envied and loved in equal measure.
What I loved were the quotes by various famous names on the wall |
Tissot celebrated in his paintings the life of the upper class - transforming everyday life into elaborate paintings of heroic deeds and celebration. His incredible talent not only as a painter but also works that demonstrate his interest in fashion.
The exhibition is structured into eight themed sections that outline a chronological journey of the artist's life telling his loves, passions and torments.
The beautiful courtyard of the Chiostro |
You can now admire his works in the Chiostro del Bramante in Rome (September 26, 2015 - February 21, 2016)
The Chiostro also houses an extensive book store, caffeteria, bistrot, activities and courses and offers accommodation.
